Scaling Up HIV Prevention Among Sex Workers and Their Clients: HUMFRIEH’s Ongoing Impact
Since 2024, HUMFRIEH has been deeply committed to advancing HIV prevention efforts among some of the most vulnerable groups in Cameroon, focusing on sex workers and their clients in the districts of Buea and Muyuka. This vital project, supported by CARE Cameroon and implemented alongside CHP, addresses the complex realities faced by these populations through targeted interventions and community-driven solutions. By tackling challenges like stigma, limited access to healthcare, and social exclusion, HUMFRIEH’s work is making a meaningful difference in reducing HIV transmission and improving the health and well-being of vulnerable individuals.

Why This Work Matters
Sex workers remain among the most vulnerable populations in the fight against HIV. They face unique challenges such as stigma, discrimination, and barriers to accessing healthcare. By designing targeted interventions, HUMFRIEH has taken the bold step of addressing these challenges head-on—ensuring that no one is left behind in the global mission to end HIV.
Targeted Interventions: Meeting Health Needs
Our interventions are carefully tailored to sex workers’ realities. From providing education on safe practices to expanding access to condoms and HIV testing services, HUMFRIEH ensures that prevention is not just theoretical but practical and accessible. This approach is essential for lowering HIV transmission rates and protecting both sex workers and their clients.
Engaging the Community: Building Trust and Awareness
Community engagement remains at the heart of our work. By holding dialogue sessions, outreach campaigns, and awareness drives, we create safe spaces where sex workers can access information and healthcare without fear. Through these efforts, we empower individuals to not only know their status but also confidently seek treatment and prevention services.
Fighting Stigma: Championing Dignity and Inclusion
Stigma is still one of the most dangerous drivers of HIV in vulnerable populations. When people feel judged or excluded, they hesitate to seek care. HUMFRIEH actively combats stigma by promoting acceptance, offering psychosocial support, and collaborating with partners who value dignity and equality. This has significantly improved health outcomes for sex workers living with HIV.
Comprehensive Services: Health Beyond HIV
Our work goes beyond HIV prevention. By integrating sexual and reproductive health services, we ensure that sex workers receive holistic support for their overall well-being. From family planning to STI management and menstrual health, our programs strengthen the healthcare foundation that vulnerable groups need to thrive.
Collaboration in Action: The AIDS-Free Holiday
In 2024, HUMFRIEH partnered with the Regional Technical Group (RTG) during the AIDS-Free Holiday activities. With the dedication of our entire team, we reached communities with life-saving information, connected many to testing and care, and reinforced the message that together, we can envision an AIDS-free generation. This collaboration exemplified the power of working hand-in-hand with regional and national partners to achieve lasting impact.

Building Capacity Through Peer Educators Training
A cornerstone of HUMFRIEH’s HIV prevention project is the comprehensive training of peer educators-trusted individuals from within the sex worker communities who are empowered to become catalysts for change. The training equips them with essential knowledge about HIV transmission, prevention strategies, and sexual and reproductive health, as well as vital communication and interpersonal skills. Through interactive sessions featuring role-plays, discussions, and skill-building exercises, Peer Educators learn how to effectively engage their peers in conversations about safer sex practices, promote HIV testing, and reduce stigma associated with the disease.
This participatory training approach not only enhances the educators’ confidence and ability to reach vulnerable populations but also fosters a supportive network that encourages healthy behaviors over the long term. Peer-led interventions have been shown to significantly increase condom use, HIV testing uptake, and reduce risky behaviors, sustaining positive change well beyond the training period. HUMFRIEH’s investment in building this grassroots capacity is crucial for ensuring the project’s sustainability and amplifying its impact within the communities it serves.
The Bigger Picture
HUMFRIEH’s commitment to scaling up HIV prevention is not just about reducing infection rates-it is about restoring hope, protecting human rights, and paving the way for inclusive healthcare. By focusing on vulnerable groups like sex workers, we contribute to broader public health goals and help build resilient communities where no one is left behind.
Our motto, “Care that gives Smiles,” continues to guide everything we do. With the support of our partners, stakeholders, and compassionate community members, we reaffirm our commitment to a healthier, more inclusive future for Cameroon and beyond.
